A TRAWLER started taking on water three miles off Beachy Head and needed help from Eastbourne RNLI.

The all weather lifeboat went to the assistance of the Shoreham trawler, pictured, on Monday (July 25).

The crew aboard the 38 tonne vessel became concerned when they realised they were taking on water and their bilge pumps were unable to cope.

They spotted an experimental lifeboat on passage to Dungeness and called for help.

A salvage pump from the experimental lifeboat was put aboard the trawler which reduced the water level sufficiently to enable remedial action to be taken. Meanwhile, Eastbourne lifeboat stood by with its salvage pump if required.

When all was secured the experimental boat continued its passage and the Eastbourne lifeboat escorted the trawler to Belle Tout lighthouse and then returned to its station.
