Revived carnival set for next June

THE DATE for Eastbourne’s Sunshine Carnival 2012 has now been fixed for Friday, June 1, which is one week earlier than the original date.

The carnival date has been set to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations of 60 years as Britain’s ruling monarch.

Stephen Lloyd MP, whose MP’s Commission has led calls for the seafront procession to be reinstated, said, “This celebration Bank Holiday weekend will start with the re-launch of Eastbourne’s Sunshine Carnival.

“It will be a fantastic event for people of all ages in Eastbourne and Willingdon.

“Bringing the carnival back to Eastbourne seafront as a community celebration has been one of my key targets since becoming an MP.

“There is an enormous enthusiasm for a community carnival, and holding it to coincide with the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend will be fantastic.”

On the Bank Holiday weekend people will also enjoy the Eastbourne Fiesta celebration of different cultures.

The date for the Fiesta has also been brought forward to create a weekend of celebrations.

Dave Cooper, the chairman of the carnival committee of the MP’s Commission, said, “Interest in the carnival has really taken off. We have had so many requests for entry forms.

“Now that the date of Friday, June 1, has been agreed we can make this a really fantastic weekend and planning the floats can really begin in earnest.

“As this is the summer of the Olympic Games we would like to get a flavour of the ‘Olympics through the Ages’ on the floats, represented by different countries and cultures through the history of the games.”

Local people and organisations will be planning floats and walking entries to reflect the dual celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic summer.

Entry forms can be collected from Stephen Lloyd MP office at 100 Seaside Road, from the Herald offices in Lismore Road or by downloading the form at
