The scheme is run by Eastbourne Borough Council and fully funded by central government following a successful bid to the Department for Communities and Local Government. It is open to all Eastbourne households.

Residents simply register their details and put out their recycling bins for a chance to be one of five winners who take home £100 each in a monthly draw.

Jill McCallum, of Channel View Road, Richard Perkins, of Golding Road, and Sylvia Heath, of The Portlands, have all won the cash prize recently and are keen for more people to sign up for Bourne to Recycle.

Sylvia said, “I think it’s a great idea. I’ve always recycled and think everyone should do it, and with this scheme there’s an opportunity to win money too.”

Richard added, “It’s so easy.

“I can’t understand why more people don’t do it. We should all be recycling.”

It was Jill’s birthday when she received the phone call to inform her she had won £100. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I’ve played the lottery and the Football Pools but never won anything before this.”

Councillor Steve Wallis, lead cabinet member for recycling, said, “I’m very pleased that 1,700 people have now pledged to recycle more by taking part in Bourne to Recycle.

“Every extra item correctly placed in your green bin not only helps the environment but also improves Eastbourne’s recycling rate; it really does make a difference.”
