A RETIRED priest from Eastbourne will stand trial over allegations of multiple sex offences against children and teenagers.
Canon Gordon Rideout, 73, of Filching Close, Wannock, is alleged to have committed the 38 offences against 18 children between 1962 and 1973 in Crawley, London and Hampshire.
He appeared at Mid Sussex Magistrates’ Court on Monday (July 16) and spoke only to confirm his name, address and that he understood the charges against him.
No plea was entered.
Mr Rideout was told to attend Lewes Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on October 19.
He was released on bail and told to live and sleep at his home address, not to contact any of the alleged victims or witnesses and not to have any unsupervised contact with under-16-year-olds.
Mr Rideout was arrested at his home in March following a nine-month investigation by Sussex Police.
Most of the alleged offences are of indecent assault on girls and boys in their early teens with 31 committed in Crawley and two further allegations are of the attempted rape of a girl in Crawley between 1962 and 1966.
