Priest charged with 38 sex offences

A HIGH ranking priest from Eastbourne has been charged with 38 sexual offences against young boys and girls.

Canon Gordon Trevor Rideout, 73, of Filching Close, was charged last night (Wednesday) with offences against 18 young girls and boys in the 1960s and 70s.

Two of the alleged offences are of attempted unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl and 36 are of alleged indecent assault on girls and boys in their early teens in Sussex, Essex and Hampshire.

Rideout, a former school governor at Bishop Bell School and chair of trustees at St Wilfrid’s Hospice, was originally arrested on March 6. After being charged at Hollingbury Police Station late last night, Rideout was released on conditional police bail and will appear at Mid Sussex Magistrates Court on Monday July 16.
