A man who viciously attacked his pregnant partner whilst she was in the bath was jailed for 11 years at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday( October 8.) *
Devon Newell, 33, of Peckham, London, launched an unprovoked attack on his partner on October 13 2012 at an address in Viking Way, Eastbourne.
The 20-year-old-victim who was three months pregnant with Newell’s baby was in the bath when Newell launched a frenzied attack. Newell repeatedly punched the victim with both fists to her head and face before strangling her and holding her under the water.
The victim managed to climb out of the bath before being dragged in to the bedroom by Newell who continued to punch and kick the victim to her stomach despite knowing that she was pregnant with his child.
The victim managed to run into the lounge however Newell continued the assault despite the victim’s flat mate being asleep on the sofa.
When Newell informed the victim that he was going back to the bedroom to get his knife the victim ran out of the house and into the street naked. A neighbour took the victim into their house and called the police however Newell had fled the scene prior to police arrival.
The victim suffered a fractured cheekbone and severe bruising to her upper body and spent a total of 13 days in hospital. Remarkably the baby was unharmed.
Newell was arrested on January 6 2013 in Peckham after the car that he was driving collided with another vehicle. Newell was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to that incident and was sentenced to eight and a half years imprisonment at Woolwich Crown Court on February 18.
Newell appeared at Hove Crown Court on July 15 and pleaded not guilty to GBH and assault. After forcing the victim to give evidence and re-live the ordeal, Newell changed his plea to guilty the following day.
Detective Sergeant Lloyd Lewis from the Adult Protection Team at Eastbourne, who led the investigation, said, “This was a vicious, sustained attack on a young pregnant woman who was completely defenceless in the bath. Devon Newell used so much force on the victim that he fractured her eye socket and left a clear trainer print on her stomach.
“The victim required surgery on her cheekbone and is now partially sighted in her left eye. The fact that the victim fled into the street completely naked shows that she was in genuine fear for her life. I am amazed that the unborn baby was not harmed.
“I am very pleased with the significant term of imprisonment imposed by the judge today which truly reflects the heinous nature of Newell’s crime.”
