382 local counts will take place acros the country after polling stations closed at 10pm tonight

The first results in other parts of the country are expected just after midnight, but counts across the county, from Crawley to Hastings, are expected to declare between 2.30am with the latest expected at around 6.30am.

Based on early count declarations an initial indication of the overall referendum result could be made by 4am, but the 12 regional centres have to declare their results before an overall result can be officially announced at Manchester Town Hall, which is expected to happen at some time after 7am.

Unlike general elections there will be no official exit poll, although a number of private companies have commissioned their own exit polls.

Peter Kyle, Sussex’s only Labour MP and a remain supporter, said yesterday he was ‘already nervous because I know how much is at stake for our country and our community’ on Facebook, while Crawley MP Henry Smith, who has backed the leave campaign, tweeted: “I voted just now for the UK to leave the EU for a positive future of greater democracy and world free trade.”
