In an application submitted earlier this month, Wealden District Council was asked to determine whether an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required to build a 290-home development to the south of Hailsham.

While not itself a request for planning permission, the application indicates proposals for the site could be in the pipeline.

According to the application – submitted on behalf of developers Gleeson Strategic Land and Rydon Homes – the proposed site would sit between the Ersham Park and Cuckoo Fields developments, to the west of Station Road.

These surrounding sites, which have both been approved at committee, could provide up to 500 new homes between them.

In response to the application, the council has confirmed that the proposals would not require an EIA.

In a decision notice, a council officer said: “The proposed development will have no significant impact upon relevant natural resources and any waste, pollution or hazard associated with the development scheme can be effectively controlled by conditions.

“The council is satisfied that the development of this site will not cause any significant loss of valuable agricultural land, will not impact upon any area of flood protection and will not compromise or undermine any acknowledged asset of natural, ecological heritage, landscape or cultural value within the site’s vicinity.”
