Andrew Michael, who briefly left the Channel 4 programme last year to stand as a UKIP candidate in Hastings and Rye, was one of more than 75 people to listen to Patrick Lowe, who is standing against Conservative incumbent Katy Bourne, Lib Dem James Walsh, and Labour’s Michael Jones, on Monday morning.

Mr Lowe referenced Mr Jones’ pledge to freeze cuts to community policing and explore other ways to save Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

He said: “If he was truly listening to the residents and the people of Sussex Michael and the other candidates would know that what they want are more fully trained police constables i.e. bobbies back on the beat, not what is being proposed by the other candidates.

“Labour wants more PCSOs, the Liberals want more community policing and Katy Bourne wants more community wardens.

“Well UKIP wants fully trained local bobbies back on the beat that’s how you cut crime, not by putting PCSO’s or community wardens on the streets who have no power of arrest.”
