ELECTION RESULT: Conservatives take Lewes from Lib Dems

Norman Baker had been MP for the area since 1997 and was protecting a majority of almost 8,000 votes from 2010’s national poll, but this was overturned by the new Conservative MP for Lewes Maria Caulfield.

Ms Caulfield, who works as a nurse at the Royal Marsden Hospital leading a team in the field of breast cancer research, polled 19,206 votes to Mr Baker’s 18,123 from a turnout of 72.4 per cent.

Meanwhile Mr Baker joins a large number of Lib Dems who have lost their seats in the general election, including high profile political casualties such as Vince Cable, Danny Alexander, and Ed Davey.

Results were:

Maria Caulfield (Conservative) 19,206

Norman Baker (Lib Dem) 18,123

Ray Finch (UKIP) 5,427

Lloyd Russell-Moyle (Labour) 5,000

Alfie Stirling (Green) 2,784.
