More than 570,000 people have signed the petition, which was launched after the Republican presidential candidate called for a temporary ban on all Muslims entering the United States.

New rules mean that any petition submitted to Government that receives more than 100,000 signatures, in certain cases, can be debated in Parliament.

The petition will be debated in Westminster Hall, not in the House of Commons, for three hours later today (Monday January 18).

But Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell said: “It’s completely outrageous that time is being spent today debating in Parliament whether to ban Donald Trump from the UK.

“There are far more important issues to be discussing, and my view is that we should debate with Mr Trump and defeat his divisive views with facts, not ban him.

“It’s no wonder ordinary people think MPs live in a bubble.”
