Holy Rood Catholic Church in Pevensey Bay has been closed for a number of years with worshippers moving to neighbouring Christ the King and St Joachim’s churches.

It has also been deconsecrated.

Now, plans have been unveiled to convert the church in Castle Drive into two four bedroom houses and build an additional two four bedroom houses on the land next to it.

An application has been submitted to Wealden District Council for the redevelopment of the site.

In a planning and design statement submitted with the application, a spokesperson for planning consultants Kember Loudon Williams said, “The church itself is a substantial brick built building, dating from the mid twentieth century.

“It has been disused for five years and deconsecrated. Full permission is sought for the conversion of the church to form two residential dwellings, with a further two homes proposed on the area of the car park, effectively as infill development between the church and the established properties to the southern side of Castle Drive.

“The proposed converted and new-build dwellings will all offer very good sized family accommodation with private gardens.

“The proposals would comply with national and local policies in terms of making best use of previously developed land within established development boundaries, and in sustainable locations, with ready access to alternative transport modes, and local services. The proposals would also assist in securing the future use of a vacant building, and resulting in the visual enhancement of an existing large car park.

“The proposals would help to support the local village economy and services, as supported by national policy.

“The delivery of 4 family homes, in the context of an acute and worsening local housing supply situation should be afforded great weight.”
