Police hunt thieves targeting schools

Police are appealing for witnesses after several lead thefts in Shinewater, Langney.

Schools and community centres in the area are being targeted for the valuable metal by thieves who strike at night.

There have also been a number of attempted thefts. In some cases quantities of lead stripped from buildings have been found ready for removal, which would suggest that thieves may have been disturbed.

Acting Sergeant Jon Attfield, of the Langney Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “Thanks to the vigilance of one local resident a quantity of lead has been recovered. This is being examined forensically and will help with our investigation.

“These thefts not only have a financial impact on our schools and community services, but can also affect our children’s education, closing facilities while repairs are carried out.”
