Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious two vehicle collision on the A27 at Firle, Lewes, in the early hours of Monday (August 4).
Emergency services were called at 1.26am to the incident near Middle Farm after a Renault Clio travelling westbound and a Ford Focus travelling eastbound collided.
The 36-year-old driver of the Renault Clio from Bexhill suffered serious injuries and he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, by ambulance.
The other driver, a 23-year-old man from South Ockendon, Essex, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. His passenger, a 26-year-old man from London, suffered minor injures.
The road has remained closed in both directions from the Drusillas roundabout to the Beddingham roundabout for investigations and to clear debris and an oil spillage. Part of the road surface has also been damaged. It is due to re-open at 9am.
Sergeant David Morgan said, “We are appealing for witnesses to this serious collision. I am particularly keen to speak to the driver of a white van who was travelling eastbound and flashed his headlights at another vehicle possibly warning him of the collision ahead.
“We also want to thank motorists for their patience while the road has been closed.”
