Police appeal after town centre attack

Police are appealing for witnesses to an attack in Eastbourne town centre after a man was left with a suspected broken nose and cuts to his face.

Officers believe the man was whipped and hit with a bat in the incident which began outside New Look in Terminus Road at about 4.20pm on Sunday 20 October when a group of teenagers attacked a man on his own.

The fight moved through the pedestrianised area to Bankers Corner and then spread into Terminus Road and Cornfield Road.

Traffic had to stop as the gang assaulted the victim in the road before the attackers ran off.

During the incident the victim is also believed to have been whipped across the face with a belt and punched and kicked in the head.

He suffered cuts to his face and a suspected broken nose.

Three teenagers, one aged 16 and two aged 17, were arrested in Mark Lane on suspicion of assault.

They were questioned before being released on bail until Monday November 25.

Police are hoping that many shoppers and people walking through the town centre will have seen something.

PC Kelley Matthews said, “There were a lot of people who stopped and watched the attack happen so I am appealing to them to come forward and tell us what they saw.

“This was a shocking burst of violence that continued through the heart of the town. Please contact us if you saw any of what happened.”
