Police in Eastbourne are seeking a suspect who carried out an unprovoked, late-night attack on a man walking home from work.

Between 1.20am and 1.40am on Friday, February 20, the 29-year old local man was walking along Carew Road and reached the junction with Upper Avenue when he was approached by a man who appeared to have been drinking, and who asked him for a cigarette.

When the victim declined to give him one, the man, without any provocation or warning, punched him in the face.

This left the victim dazed and confused with a nasty bruise underneath his right eye. The suspect just carried on walking eastward along Upper Avenue towards the nearby roundabout and the victim made his way home.

The suspect is described as white, in his early to mid twenties, with a local accent, 5’10”, wearing a large, dark green or possibly blue winter jacket like a puffer jacket but without the seams, dark cotton type tracksuit bottoms and a red baseball cap.

PC Chris Yabsley said, “This assault was completely unprovoked and I am hoping that the red baseball cap in particular will ring a bell with someone.
