A COMMEMORATIVE portrait of former mayor and councillor Maurice Skilton has been unveiled at the Beachy Head Countryside Centre.
Mr Skilton, who died last year, was instrumental in the setting up of the centre next to the Beachy Head public house and supported it throughout.
He was also vice-chairman of the centre, which has an exhibition focusing on the history of the downland and Beachy Head as well as a gallery of paintings and photographs of the area by local artists, arts and crafts and shop.
Peter Mumford from the centre said, “Maurice Skilton was a pivotal part in getting the centre open eight, nine years ago.
“We as a committee wanted to commemorate him in some way and felt this would be nice.”
Mr Skilton, a popular Liberal Democrat councillor and campaigner known as Smiler, was brought up in Old Town, served on both Eastbourne and East Sussex councils and was awarded an MBE in the 1998 New Year’s Honours’ List for services to the community in East Sussex. He died last year aged 90.
