Hundreds of people took to the streets of Eastbourne yesterday in a protest against the proposed sale of 3,000 acres of downland.

The rally started on Terminus Road and made its way to the bandstand, with campaigners and members of the public chanting “Whose Downs? Our Downs!” and, “Stop the sale!” in a show of opposition against Eastbourne Borough Council’s proposal to sell the four farms.

Many expressed their anger at the Council’s controversial poll in the Eastbourne Review, while others encouraged people to select the option to cut public services rather than sell the farms.

A number of Conservative councillors, who had earlier in the week had their call for a referendum on the sale rejected, also joined the march.
