These ‘rubbish’ pet portraits by Sussex artist have taken the internet by storm

A Sussex artist who captures people’s pets in a not always flattering light has become an internet sensation and raised thousands of pounds for a homeless charity.

Operating under the name Hercule van Wolfwinkle, he started out by offering commissions to draw people’s pets, in his signature ‘rubbish’ style, to raise money for Worthing-based homeless charity Turning Tides. Hercule marketed his drawings as having a recommended retail price of £299, but has instead allowed interested parties to donate to his Turning Tides fundraiser. Any amount is allowed, but £14 is recommended as that allows the charity to provide someone with breakfast and a hot shower. The overwhelming demand has turned the requests into a lottery, with commissions not guaranteed, as Hercule is a part-time alter ego of a real, full-time person. But over £10,000 has already been raised for the Worthing-based charity and his creations have appeared across national media.
