Ten-hour search for missing kayaker off Brighton is called off

A multi-agency search off the coast of Brighton after a person was seen going into the water with a kayak has been called off ten hours after it started.

HM Coastguard said a person was seen off Hove Lagoon, near Brighton, at 10.10am on Sunday (August 2).

A large-scale search was started shortly after when a kayak and paddle were found ashore in the area.

At 4pm, the coastguard said it had confirmed the identity of the kayaker, and the search was ongoing.

At 9.30pm, Shoreham Lifeboat said the search had been called off and their lifeboats had returned to station.

Coastguard rescue teams from Newhaven and Shoreham joined the search, as well as the Brighton RNLI lifeboat.

A coastguard rescue helicopter also joined the search.
