The annual awards ceremony was due to take place in the summer but was delayed due to the pandemic.

Despite lockdown it received over 70 award entries.

Two award winners and one highly commended in Eastbourne and the surrounding area. The Congress Theatre and Welcome Building (submitted by Levitt Bernstein, London) was described by the judging as a “sensitive restoration of the Grade II* listed theatre with the addition of the well-designed Welcome Centre, which takes forward the borough council’s vision for the economic regeneration of the town”. A private home on the outskirts of Eastbourne, won an Award in the residential category for East Grinstead based architects, Valley Builders. The Grade II listed Manor House needed urgent repairs including retaining the double-height 15th-century Great Hall.

A highly commended certificate went to St Andrew’s Church in Polegate for the Reshingling of the Church Spire by local architect Richard Crook of John D Clarke Architects, Eastbourne. Many shingles had been blown away or attacked by woodpeckers and needed urgent replacement for the Grade I listed church, which was built around 1360.

Further local success was seen for Clarke Roofing Southern Limited, the award winning, family run roofing and construction company based in Eastbourne. West Dean College of Arts and Conservation is a Grade II* building on the outskirts of Chichester, West Sussex, with a 130-year-old roof which needed complete restoration. As the contractors they received an Award for this complicated project, with the judging team commenting: “superb restoration of an historic building using appropriate traditional materials”.

Chairman of the Sussex Heritage Trust, Simon Knight, said: “This good news story demonstrates the importance of excellent architecture and design, traditional building skills and craftmanship and arguably without these the heritage we have in Sussex would be all the poorer.”’
