Owners Donna Bull and Ray Grant said Covid is part of the reason for the new charge.

And they say the reaction from visitors to the attraction, situated on Hailsham Road at Stone Cross, has been hugely positive.

The charges were brought in on August 1. There is now an entrance fee of £1.50 per person, while it’s £5 for a family of four, and under threes are free.

Donna said: “We want to thank our customers for their understanding and positive reaction.

“We have now been here 12 months and we have always thought that there should be a value to what we offer. It’s obviously still free to visit our largely popular farm shop, butchers and our newly revamped cafe but there is now a charge to the rest of our premises.

“We have 79 acres packed with various attractions.”

The pair have invested heavily in Sharnfold Farm in their first 12 months and they have exciting plans for the future.

Donna said: “The charges are similar to when we ask for a small fee at Easter and Halloween, and you don’t have to book. Within the cost, you can pick up an activity sheet for the children and walk our Fairy Trail.

“There are plenty of animals to see with information boards, and the play area is fully open. We are investing and making further improvements in our farm trail as well.

“We really hope that people understand our reasoning and carry on supporting Sharnfold Farm. We are confident this will not put people off and we are having a very, very busy summer, which is so pleasing.

“The past few months have been tough for everyone, everywhere, and we want to welcome people, regardless of age, and have a good time with us.”

Donna said Lockdown has, of course, had an impact. She said: “Due to Covid, we have had to increase cleaning and reduce seating, and the lack of farmers during lockdown has also had an impact on our crops this year.

“We appreciate people’s ongoing custom and support and we have so much to offer in the summer sun, including PYO.”

The new coffee shop is an added attraction. The floor area is five times the size it was, and will be able to host functions, parties and wedding receptions once lockdown is lifted.”
