Person airlifted to hospital after incident at Eastbourne cliffs

A person was airlifted to hospital after suffering an injury at Cow Gap at Beachy Head.

The person was taken to hospital in Brighton on Wednesday (May 20) by a HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd.

South East Ambulance Service said they initially received a call at around 3pm regarding a person with an ‘isolated ankle injury’ but due to the terrain the helicopter was called to assist.

A HM Coastguard spokesperson said, “At just after 4.20pm on Wednesday (May 20), the HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd was sent to an incident close to Cow Gap following a report of an injured person.

“Birling Gap and Eastbourne Coastguard Rescue Teams were also sent and assisted South East Ambulance Service. One person was winched by the helicopter and taken to hospital.”

A SECAMB spokesperson said, “We got the call at about 3pm to Cow Gap for a person with an isolated ankle injury. We sent two cars but the person was taken directly to hospital by the coastguard helicopter.

“SECAmb stood down our ambulance which was going to attend the scene.”
