Investigations continue to decide future of Eastbourne swimming pool

Last year Motcombe Pool closed due to Covid restrictions. While the pool was shut a number of maintenance issues were raised, according to Eastbourne Borough Council.

In November last year residents were fearful of the future of the pool due to the fact no opening date was given as the country came out of the second lockdown.

At the time of those worries, a spokesperson for the council said, “It is not economically viable to open the pool during lockdown and while we continue to follow social distancing guidelines. It is a similar case for many smaller public pools.

“Built nearly 120 years ago in 1904, there are a number of significant and complex maintenance issues at Motcombe Pool.

“The necessary repairs and modernisation required will be considered in due course, against other priorities within the council’s future capital programme of works and available funding.”

Jan Bruce, who teaches classes at the pool, said, “I and many others would be upset if it didn’t reopen. There will be local people that will want to support it.”

Now with the road map out of lockdown in full swing, the question of the future of the pool has been raised again.

A spokesperson for the council said ‘detailed investigations are being carried out to evaluate the significant repairs and modernisation required’ at the pool.

The spokesperson said, “Once our examinations are complete, the works identified will be considered within the council’s future capital programme and available funding.

“While we are preparing to reopen the Sovereign Centre for swimming next month when lockdown restrictions are eased, Motcombe Pool will remain closed at this time.”

Financial Portfolio Holder Councillor Stephen Holt said, “I know how much the Motcombe Pool is valued by the Old Town Community.

“At present, we are awaiting the details and costings of what works need to be done to bring back to life this wonderful building which is over 100 years old.

“Motcombe Pool is a true asset to our town, and will be considered as part of our annual capital programme.”

John Ungar, Old Town county councillor, said “The works may take some time as any building of this nature would.

“However, I want to reassure residents that we are committed to ensuring the pool reopens so that future generations can enjoy it.”
