Free parking scrapped for Eastbourne council staff as charges rise

Free parking for staff working at Eastbourne council is to be scrapped – and parking charges in the town centre will rise.

Staff parking in Southfields Road and College Road, which is currently free to authority employees, will be removed and off-street parking in Hyde Gardens – the central part of the road – will rise.

The changes come as Eastbourne council hopes to bring in an extra £100,000 a year.

Only recently, East Sussex County Council, which operates most of the pay to park scheme across the town, said it was upping charges.

That sparked a protest from Eastbourne council but this week a spokesperson said the measures would ‘help towards the council’s efficiency and savings aims’.

A spokesperson said, “As part of our review of off-street parking, we have removed free staff parking in Southfields Road and College Road.

“Eastbourne council operates off-street parking in Hyde Gardens and a separate tariff is enforced by East Sussex County Council for on-street parking in this area.

“Therefore, we are also planning to align our off-street parking charges with any proposed increase by ESCC to on-street parking in Hyde Gardens.
