Miles Hicks was described as a ‘gentle soul’ who was ‘very loved’ at an inquest into his death on Thursday (August 20).

The 27-year-old’s sister Alice said in a statement read at the inquest, “Alex was level-headed, very down to earth.

“He was a gentle soul with a great sense of humour, very loved by friends and family.”

She described him as ‘extremely intelligent’ and said he had lots of friends and had planned to go skiing with them the following week.

The inquest at Eastbourne Town Hall also heard a statement from Miles’ mother Angela.

She said he was a gentle spoken, well-mannered, funny, ‘adorable’ young man.

He enjoyed lacrosse and socialising, she said, and was held in high regard by his many friends.

She said, “My son’s death has shocked and saddened everybody who knew him.”

Miles’ body was found at Beachy Head on March 15 this year, the inquest heard.

The national police helicopter (NPAS) helped recover him, as well as another man who had been found there the same day, Martin McGlue.

The deaths were not linked, said police.

Coroner Alan Craze said, “Beachy Head is a fairly notorious place where sadly people go to take their lives.”

He expressed his sympathies to the family and reached a conclusion of suicide.
