East Sussex fire crews call on Eastbourne residents to refrain from burning waste

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service made the plea today (April 9) on their Twitter account and listed the negative consequences of burning waste.

An ESFRS spokesperson said, “Please don’t burn household, or garden waste. There are toxic chemicals in household waste, it causes pollution; is harmful to people’s health; smoke drifts across the road and is a danger to traffic; is a nuisance to neighbours; there is a potential fine of up to £5,000; possible fire spread.

“It is important to appreciate during this time that neighbours and more vulnerable members of our community are self-isolating and want to get fresh air into their homes.

“It is also important for the community to stop garden bonfires at this time, due to the increased fire risk this creates, as well as the impact on others.”
