Ottilie Jaye Tuson was born to proud parents Emily Lawrence and Matthew Tuson, weighing 6lbs 11oz.

Mum Emily said, “We weren’t sure if we would be able to have Ottilie at Eastbourne Midwifery Unit as they were closed due to the pandemic.

“Luckily they reopened just in time for her arrival.

“It was the most wonderful experience and we are so happy about our choice to deliver there. We could not have asked for a more calm and relaxing birth and Amy our midwife was amazing.

“Everyone was so warm and friendly you didn’t feel like you were in a hospital. We would highly recommend it to anyone debating on where to deliver their baby.”

It comes after the unit at Eastbourne District General Hospital (DGH) was temporarily closed in March due to the covid-19 pandemic, with expectant mothers being sent to Hastings Conquest in the meantime.

But it reopened once more on July 6 this year, and Ottilie was born on July 11.

Acting Matron Denise Andrade said, “We are thrilled that 2,000 babies have been born at the Eastbourne Midwifery Unit and are happy to celebrate this milestone with Emily, Matthew and their family.

“We would like to thank all the families that have supported us since we opened in May 2013 and during the temporary suspension of births at the unit.

“We are delighted that the Eastbourne Midwifery Unit is becoming the first choice for many families in the local area.”

The Eastbourne Midwifery Unit has been open since 2013, when maternity services at the DGH were transferred to Hastings Conquest.
