As the country was told to stay at home and those with health problems told to self-isolate, Shanaz Mansoor wanted to do something to help.

Shanaz was organising the lifestyle show at the Welcome Building, which was due to take place on March 14 and 15 but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

She said: “I found myself at the weekend with nothing to do, looking through Facebook and feeling concerned for the elderly and vulnerable people.”

She has now set up a group enabling people to look out for each other. She said: “We need people to make sure their neighbours, friends and family have enough food and medicine. However, some people can’t do that because they live away, so we have set up this group.

“We also encourage members to look out for those around them who have no access to social media, and request on their behalf.

“The response in the community so far has been very encouraging, with thousands of people joining and offering to help in the community.”

A coordinated response with other organisations is underway but in the meantime, volunteers in the group will respond to requests.

Anyone giving or receiving help should follow all the guidelines in the group description and announcements with regards to safeguarding, and take sensible precautions.
Anybody without Facebook can call 077914 76669.
