There are 49 public access defibrillators in Eastbourne, thanks in no small part to the Heart Beat Campaign. Scroll to the end of this article for the full list.

It’s a project which has been dedicated to providing more of them across the area, to give people a fighting chance if they suffer cardiac arrest.

Since 2016, the Defibrilator Partnership has been working to fund and install as many as they can.

Councillor Alan Shuttleworth, chair of the Defibrillator Partnership group, said, “People must not be afraid to use a defibrillator in the event of someone having a cardiac arrest.

“You will be guided through by the automated voice on the machine and the telephone support from emergency services (999).

“Minutes are critical for the patient’s chances of survival so everyone needs to know where their nearest public access defibrillator is, and to ask someone to get it while they call 999.”

Councillor Shuttleworth said, “I would like to thank Alec Stephens for his tremendous amount of work in establishing this network of public access defibrillators across the town.

“As an Eastbourne Lions Club leader, including two years as its President, Alec has played a key role in driving forward this lifesaving project.

“I know he intends to continue this work as part of Eastbourne First Responders. But I would like to place on record our thanks for his commitment to this cause.”

Eastbourne Borough Council and Eastbourne First Responders are overseeing the maintenance of the defibrillator network and people are encouraged to make a donation to the Heartbeat Fund which is used to replace pads and batteries as well as supply defibrillators.
