An Eastbourne man who spent his childhood at Dr Barnardo’s Churchill House in Summerdown Road, Eastbourne, in the 1960s was among the special guests invited to celebrate the charity’s 150th Anniversary Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace last week.
Roger Bell joined the Navy after leaving the home, which closed in 1971, then worked in the entertainment industry, as a DJ and at Diplocks and Ziggys for the brewery Bass Charrington. He worked as a nurse at All Saint’s and is now at the DGH.
Roger, who also has a son Gary and two grandchildren, was selected out of 250 people from across the UK to attend the garden party in the presence of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy and The Duchess of Gloucester.
