OUT IN THE FIELD: Suggestions on a postcard please

Regular readers will know that while I am not averse to sending a few quid to orphans in Africa, I firmly believe that charity begins at home. With that in mind I have signed up for a press spot on a fund-raising trek to Cambodia next year in aid of the Chestnut Tree Hospice for local children with life-shortening conditions, their siblings and families. Aside from trying to lose two stone and stop smoking ahead of the 85 kilometre trek over nine days, I am also hoping to raise in excess of £2,000 for the charity. The fund-raising begins in earnest soon but rather than the usual head shave, sponsored walk etc, I am looking for some more unusual ways to raise money including combining my love for putting flatpack furniture together, washing dishes, hosting dinners and talking to organisations all in return for donations. I am even considering doing Rent A Wife (if someone can run Hire a Hubby, I can do it too) and all '“ legal and moral '“ suggestions will be welcome. I am rather broad-minded so sensible suggestions on a postcard please.

The Winter Night Shelter at the Salvation Army is one of my favourite charities locally and as always the volunteers are treated to a superb meal each year as a thank you for their efforts in running it. Last Saturday was no exception when once again Steven Holt whipped up a delectable three course feast for more than 50 people that wouldn’t look out of place in a fine restaurant.

Thanks this week to Nat Gonella for sending in this photograph of our lovely clock at the railway station which it would appear is starting to show signs of ageing. Look carefully at the photo and you can see masonry crumbling and lodging behind the clock face.

I absolutely love the graffiti adorning the hoarding surrounding the old BT Exchange in Moy Avenue at the moment. It’s a great idea to provide a colourful and interesting backdrop and makes me smile every time I drive past it.
