Why is Eastbourne still lagging behind?

In Parliament last week Caroline Ansell called for Eastbourne to lead the way in developing a Covid secure Kitemark to aid regeneration of the town as we unlock.

It’s unclear, then, why Eastbourne is still lagging behind its neighbours after the government’s instruction for towns to action new transport infrastructure post-Covid.

With the known absence of any return to normal public transport, the town is expected to become gridlocked when more people return to work solely by car.

The government’s plan is for towns to promote pedestrian and cycling safety post-Covid by introducing wide-spread 20mph speed limits and full-lane cycle ways to make walking and cycling more viable. Eastbourne is one of Britain’s most dangerous towns for people walking or cycling (by recorded collisions, 2016).

The last nine weeks has given Eastbourne respite from our congested and often frantic traffic, bringing peace, less pollution and greater safety for all of us.

In her pursuit of a Covid secure Kitemark, hopefully Caroline Ansell will engage with the borough and county council to introduce a safe and effective transport infrastructure now to allow Eastbourne to protect its citizens whilst regenerating.
