I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all our residents and businesses in the parish of Willingdon and Jevington, for the way in which they have responded in such a variety of ways to support both their neighbours and the wider community.

I give an enormous thank you to our parish clerk, Stephen Keogh and our assistant clerk and cemetery manager Nicola Williamson for taking it in turns to be in our parish office at The Triangle, answer the telephone and check and answer emails from residents.

They have also been keeping a register of local volunteers willing to assist with a variety of tasks for those unable to do their own shopping etc.

To those who have volunteered – another big thank you.

I am loath to mention all the businesses and individuals by name for fear of leaving someone out – but you all know who you are – and I and my fellow councillors are most grateful.

Our clerk has also produced a list of local (and nearby) shops and businesses providing home deliveries of food and household essentials.

A copy of this has been put up in our Willingdon Residents Association notice boards at our Willingdon Library and the one by St Anne’s Vets at the corner of Gorringe Valley Road and Eastbourne Road.

I would like to give a special thanks to Southern Landscapes (John Hesse) who have continued to maintain our cemetery in Gorringe Valley Road whilst adhering strictly to the Government guidelines on the present coronavirus situation.

It is also appropriate here to thank all those who have been cutting their own verges and in some cases, those of their neighbours, during this time when our highway grass contractor has been stopped having been told it is non-essential work.

Most residents understand why this is not being done at present and I have to say the clerk and I have only received one complaint.

All council meetings have been cancelled for the foreseeable future and any urgent business is being conducted by the relevant councillors by email.

For those with access to Facebook, we are posting regular updates on our Willingdon Residents Association Facebook page, including video postings from Dr Russell Brown of Manor Park Surgery which are most useful.

There is also useful information to be found on the Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council website and the Willingdon Community News Facebook page.

An enormous thank you to all our essential workers especially those working for the NHS, the Wealden refuse teams and all those working in our local shops, the pharmacy and businesses that are open to serve us.

Finally, I send my best wishes and thanks to all our residents and their families and indeed the wider community who continue to adhere to the government guidelines – stay well and keep safe.
