Eastbourne’s sea air is good for one’s health

GF Chambers in his book “Eastbourne Memories” blames an outbreak of cholera in the 19th century for the changed fortunes and appeal of the town to daytrippers.

Obviously, cholera was not a great advertisement for Eastbourne as a place of health and education.

On the other hand, there is something to be said for the railway making day trips possible for people.

The sea air and the surrounding countryside are the best medicines in the doctor’s bag.

There are reported cases attributing a stay at Eastbourne to a complete cure.
