Driving south along Lottbridge Drove earlier this week we were pleasantly surprised to note litter being picked up and bagged ready for collection.

This is surely overdue and needs to continue on a regular basis along and down to the end (especially around the shrubs in the vicinity of Tesco) then on to Cross Levels Way, Jubilee Way etc.

These areas in particular are a disgrace to those persons who prefer to ruin our countryside rather than take their rubbish home – something that my wife and I are at a complete loss to understand.

Unfortunately this doesn’t end here.

Our side roads, parks, beaches and car parks are all subject to the abuse of a mindless minority who just don’t give a damn.

We have noted in our travels places such as Singapore, Auckland and Toronto where there just isn’t any litter to be seen.

My wife will often go out of her way to pick up rubbish in the vicinity and either use a bin or take it home and dump it in ours.

Has society reached a stage where we no longer care about our environment?

Is it even possible to educate these mindless morons?

I cannot help looking to our local council to provide a lead, and maybe the police who may notice coffee cups and McDonalds wrappers, as an example, being chucked out of a van or car windows.

A further thought is why many villains who are these days given community orders in lieu of fines or prison sentences aren’t utilised to clear litter off our streets surely a practical and useful fulfilment of their time?

Frustrated and exasperated beyond just words!
