LETTER: True friends beyond Europe

Only a few weeks ago David Cameron was plodding around the EU with his '˜begging bowl' trying to get a few crumbs to take home. Had the Germans and French been more supportive of his larger ambitions it would truly have given him leverage in the UK and genuine reasons to argue for staying in the EU. What he got was difficult negotiations and very few concessions thus making the job of the '˜in side' much more difficult and far harder to argue the case to remain.

Now we have France and Germany saying ‘please don’t go’ but not, as true friends might, offering more concessions and support in order to tempt us into remaining, but threats and more threats. Since when do ‘friends’ threaten each other? If nothing else it shows the true level of ‘friendship and co-operation’ from the EU, and how little ‘influence’ the UK has with Brussels when ‘push’ comes to ‘shove’!

Indeed I almost, but not quite, feel sorry for our Prime Minister over this.

Maybe we should just say ‘Do as you please, you have no influence here now’ and go to our true friends, tried and tested in war and peace, and simply stay with the Commonwealth, the USA and the world beyond the EU.

That is the true choice in a few weeks time.
