LETTER: Stand back and consider calmly

The borough councillors have a dilemma. Because of over ambitious spending they find the treasury short on funds to maintain the services that they are elected to provide.

To overcome the dilemma they are positively considering the sale of the town’s assets. May I suggest that they stand back and consider the situation calmly. A point they should prioritise on is that once the sale is complete they will not be able to reverse it and will have lost control of future development.

By the way, the quoted value, if correct of £80 million, is well below value.

A cut in services can be reversed. When they have sensibly looked at all their projects they could cancel some that are really not necessary, for instance the decision to replace the Wish Tower restaurant when we have many eating places of all categories in the town. Resiting the Western View café is far from necessary, especially as the café has proved a profitable success.
