She cites the price of flowers and chocolates and the possibility of cheaper flights and phone calls on foreign holidays as a justification for remaining, asserting that this means more money in the average person’s pocket.

These minor points fade into insignificance when looking at the reality that, once free of the Common Agricultural Policy and the Common Fisheries Policy, plus once again being able to make advantageous bilateral trade deals with other nations, it has been estimated that the average family could be as much as £20 a week better off.

Such paltry benefits as Ms Bearder seems to regard as important are anyway irrelevant when one considers the price we should pay by remaining a member of the EU. Our democracy would be fatally compromised, because we would be exchanging a system whereby we can elect our lawmakers for one where the latter are appointed functionaries, over whom we have no control. That is the real heart of the matter, not the price of daffodils.
