LETTER: Military only a part of history

We read a certain amount '“ in both Herald comment, and Letters '“ about what is to become of the collection of military memorabilia. While not denying that this is important, I do think it needs to be placed in context. Military artefacts are only a very small part of Eastbourne's rich history and, as such, are of interest and importance to a relatively small number of people. I think there are many people who feel, as I do, that a town of the size and stature of Eastbourne should have a 'proper' museum with a purpose-built home and I, for one, am delighted to learn that plans have been drawn up and a realistic proposal put forward to have such a building. I believe it will be of immense value to both residents and visitors. The recent small exhibitions which have been held in the Pavilion cafe have been enough to show what an active and professional team our museum staff are now and what potential there is.

I would assume that there will be some room in a new building for a section on Eastbourne’s military history so may I suggest that the relevant interested parties identify the most important items in discussion with the museum staff and dispose of the rest elsewhere – for example some items could probably be deposited at the County Records Office. And possibly art works could be offered to the Towner gallery.

Another thought: what will happen to the Eastbourne Heritage Centre in Carlisle Road when the museum is built? Perhaps it could house some of the items which are currently in the Redoubt.
