LETTER: Make all-day parkers pay

I write to describe my observations on parking in Eastbourne. I recently visited a block of offices in The Avenue to deliver some correspondence.

I could not find a space near the location to leave my car for five minutes, whilst I went into these offices. This was due to nose to tail parking on all the streets adjacent to The Avenue.

I drove along the lengths of the following roads: Commercial Road, St Leonards Road, The Avenue, Upperton Gardens, St Anne’s Road, Eversfield Road, Hartfield Road , Bedford Grove and Enys Road. There were no spaces until I went round a second time and found a space in Bedford Grove due to a car moving off.

I was gradually expanding my search and getting further away from where I had to deliver the correspondence (I am 84, and not too steady walking these days). It was patently obvious that these roads were littered by ‘all day parkers’ due to the owners working in all sorts of establishments, be it offices, shops or whatever.

They are using the public highway as a long-term garage and preventing the casual visitors anywhere to stop for short time to carry out whatever business they have, be it social or commercial.

These ‘parkers’, could well use public transport to get to and from work. They have taken over the roads bordered by private residences,some distance from their places of work. They leave their vehicles unattended for perhaps eight to 10 hours a day, every weekday.

By levying an annual fee of say £500 to £1,000 per vehicle on the ALL DAY parkers the problem would go away.

This is only targeted against outsiders, who don’t live in the area, but work there.
