LETTER: Defend right to life at all stages

Steve Parlanti [Letters, February 19] advocates assisted suicide in light of very hard and emotive cases seen on TV recently. No one can be unmoved by such suffering.

He misses the point, however, when he criticises our MP, Caroline Ansell, for opposing a change in the law. He claims not to understand the term”legislative creep” used by Mrs Ansell when the meaning is fairly obvious. None of the sad cases put before the public to justify assisted suicide would have been covered by the laws proposed so far by people like Steve Parlanti. So-called safeguards would limit the type of cases involved and time limits for life expectancy and so on.

Hence, Mr Parlanti, if successful in achieving a change in the law, would not be satisfied and would almost certainly be asking for further changes in the future. Another name for this is a “slippery slope”.
