LETTER: This calls for a referendum

Those who use the Sovereign Centre, a small proportion of Eastbourne residents, would no doubt agree that an upgrade is long overdue.

However if, to fund this, or indeed any other town development, the downland farms are sold off, not only the residents of this town, but the people of this country would be the losers.

The beauty of our downland attracts many thousands of visitors from far and wide to this unique corner of England every year, each one contributing to the local economy. Housing estates, and/or wind farms would hardly hold the same attraction, and would mean that the precious legacy of our beautiful downland would be denied to our future generations.

If ever there were a case for holding a referendum on a local issue, this must be it. It is too important to be left in the hands of ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ local politicians. The people should be given their say.
