Help support Older People's Day celebrations

Recently I wrote about the importance of protecting older people as well as young people from abuse

But there is a more positive side to the way we engage with the older generation and next month East Sussex will begin a two-month celebration of the contribution they make.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have admired and been wowed by the athleticism, skill and determination of the Olympic competitors. Many of them are the epitome of youth, fitness and vigour, and it would probably be fair to say that, on the whole, they are “full of life”.

But during our two month celebration of the role of older people, which includes Older People’s Day on October 1st, we are reminded that being “full of life” is something that can and should apply to people of any age or physical and mental fitness.

It is our duty as a society, and as friends and family members, to make sure that our elderly relatives and neighbours are given the tools and opportunities they need to continue living life to the full.

Throughout September and October, activities ranging from sport taster sessions to health walks and coffee mornings will be taking place, with double the number of events on offer than there were for last year’s celebrations.

With the highest number of people over the age of 85 in the country, East Sussex is a county in which the number of opportunities available to the older generation really matters. That is why it is so fantastic to see that Older People’s Day this year is being used to offer new activities, and the chance to make new friends.

I hope the whole of East Sussex, from the youngest resident to the oldest, will support the Older People’s Day celebrations as we celebrate and take pride in the fact that we count so many older people among our neighbours. The contribution they make to our communities is invaluable, and it is only right that we do everything we can to make sure that they continue living life to the full.
