Should birthdays in 2020 just be cancelled? | Kelly Brown

Birthdays for 2020 should just be officially cancelled - surely this year doesn’t count!

Among all the announcements of ever changing restrictions this is one piece of policy that I’m sure all of us can get behind ... to hit the pause button on our ages for a year.

OK so maybe under 18s would be exempt from this make-believe rule. After all, we know just how important getting older is to our little ones.

My son recently had his birthday and he would not have been impressed if I cancelled it this year.

Organising a couple of days out with different friends to celebrate was just as important to my son as my filling the living room with balloons for him to enjoy that morning.

But as my own birthday approaches later this month I’m just wondering what the point is.

Might as well just ignore the whole thing and worry about it next year, right?

I’ve never been one for big birthday celebrations anyway. Partly because I’m not a fan of being the centre of attention and partly because I think you stop getting excited about your birthday once you turn 22.

And even if I did want to celebrate my birthday by going out for a meal, going to the pub or even going out for the day trying to organise anything this year as a faff as best.

The Hokey Cokey of restrictions means I could plan to see people one week, and find out that I’m not allowed to see them the next, and I can’t be doing with all of that.

I know those people who have had babies, got married or celebrated something special will want to think of 2020 as a year to remember.

But for the rest of us let’s just draw a line under the year and fast forward to next year where (hopefully) we can celebrate our birthdays in whatever way we choose.

Even if we choose not to do very much.
