Caring for children in their own homes

A lot of our work here in East Sussex involves caring for children in their own homes. Though the hospice itself is in West Sussex we still offer care for life-limited children throughout East Sussex, and although families are still able to use the hospice for overnight stays if they wish, quite often they would prefer to stay at home and have one of our community nurses care for them there.

This just wouldn’t be possible without the support of our Community Team. The team play a vital role in the lives of the children and families cared for in East Sussex. A community nurse will visit every new family and introduce them to Chestnut Tree and the variety of services we can offer. All of our families are allocated a key worker from the community team to remain a familiar point of contact at Chestnut Tree.

One of the community nurses may provide a few hours nursing care while mum and dad take a much needed break to enjoy some time together, or with siblings. They will offer support with completing often complicated medical forms, and also provide emotional support for the whole family.

And, when the time comes, our nurses provide end of life care in the families’ own homes, and offer pre and post bereavement support to parents, siblings and grandparents.

We currently care for 55 children in East Sussex, but we know that there are many more that need our help. In order to reach them, we need to raise more awareness and more vital funds to pay for their care. Did you know £195 will pay for one of our community nurses to visit a child in their own homes and offer a few hours specialist nursing care?

We need all the help we can get to raise these funds, and need you, the people of East Sussex, to put your Hands Up! and help us provide care to all of the children and families who so desperately need us.
