A TRIO of young swimmers have been presented with top awards by Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew.

They won Achiever of the Year accolades at this year’s Southern Water Learn to Swim awards.

Alexandra Ryan, 5, from Long Beach Close, Eastbourne, has swimming lessons at with ABSwimming. Alexandra was nominated for being an amazing swimmer who inspires others.

Hugo Holmes-Bower, 8, from Broad Street Green, Hooe, has swimming lessons with Silverdale Swim School at St Mary’s School Pool. Hugo was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes aged five, but he hasn’t let this get in the way of his swimming.

Josh, Lawrence, 9, from Malthouse Way, Hellingly, has swimming lessons at Freedom Leisure in Bexhill. Josh has overcome his fear of the water to become an accomplished swimmer.

They were among 25 winners who were nominated for the awards and received medals and goodie bags while they were cheered on by their proud parents, swimming instructors, siblings and friends.

The awards are given to children who have displayed one or more of the seven Olympic values in order to overcome particular difficulties or for exceptional performance.

In the year the Olympic Games come to London, the Learn to Swim scheme is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Learn to Swim supports lessons at 85 pools and clubs across the region and has taught more than 600,000 children to swim since it began in 1992.

Southern Water went to great lengths to ensure that the event, held at Kent Barns, Maidstone, on May 20, was a fun day for all.
