YOUNG musicians will herald the arrival of spring with a series of special fundraising concerts in historic churches in East Sussex.
Members of the South Downs Youth Orchestra will be performing the concerts as they stride out to various churches on the South Downs for a sponsored walk and play event on April 2.
Formed back in 1989 and part of the East Sussex Music Service, the orchestra will tour various Downland churches to give performances of music by Susato, Bach, Faure, Debussy, Mozart and Schubert – all in one day.
The young musicians aged 12-19 come from in and around the area now designated as the South Downs National Park and their day-long tour of various churches will visit various villages before culminating in a final concert in Alfriston.
This concert will include a selection of music from the performances held earlier in the day.
Admission to the various concerts is free but members of the orchestra will be raising sponsorship funds from their walk and performances which will be donated to church funds.
Collections will also be held at each event.
The event will see performances at the following churches:
Folkington 10.30am (brass and percussion), Wilmington 12.30pm (brass and percussion), Friston 10am (strings), West Dean 12.30pm (strings), Jevington 10am (strings), Litlington 12.30pm (strings), Alciston 10.30am (chamber orchestra), Berwick 12.30pm (chamber orchestra) and Alfriston 3.30pm (full orchestra).
The orchestra is part of the East Sussex Music Service, a County Council service which provides music tuition and teaching along with a whole host of concert groups, choirs, wind bands and ensembles.
