MP on human rights bill issue

Caroline was briefed during the meeting at Westminster about Liberty’s opposition to any change in human rights legislation because the pressure group fears it will restrict freedoms guaranteed under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

The Government made a manifesto pledge to implement a British Bill of Rights during this Parliament, but the proposals have not yet been published.

“It was an excellent fact finding mission for me to speak with Shami on this issue which will prove to be complex and controversial, if legislation comes before Parliament” said Caroline.

“A British Bill of Rights is something that will allow British courts to decide upon matters and not the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg – something that has caused problems in the past. However, any new legislation must offer the same levels of protection for citizens as the previous law, and I will be looking very closely at any bill, if and when, it becomes before MPs.”
