Konika Dhar, whose brother Siddhartha Dhar has travelled to Syria to join the terrorist group, took questions from Nus Ghani MP as she gave evidence to the Home Affairs Committee.

Ms Ghani struggled to control her emotions as she spoke about the actions of Daesh.

She said: “He’s [Siddhartha Dhar] probably engaged in enslaving, beheading and in raping. This is what Daesh does.”

She wept as she described an interview with a victim of Daesh. She said: “One of the women states ‘one of the saddest things I remember is this little girl, 12 years old, and they raped her without mercy’.”

She stopped to compose herself before adding “I’m so sorry”, and continued: “These are the activities your brother has engaged in - do you still think he’s a good man?”

Ms Dhar replied: “I think this is quite a sort of sensitive topic to talk about.

“My opinion will always be biased because he’s my brother.

“I don’t want to believe he is who he is today and... I still don’t want to associate the activities that Nusrat has just described with my brother.”
